Downtown Marietta is the most constrained tree work we do and often the most interesting. Lots are narrow, the houses are close together and frequently historic, mature trees sit within a few feet of structures and power service, and street parking limits where a truck can stage. Almost nothing here can be felled — it comes apart piece by piece and gets lowered by rope through whatever gap exists.
Heritage trees deserve a different first question
Around Whitlock Avenue, Kennesaw Avenue and the Church-Cherokee district there are white oaks, willow oaks and southern magnolias considerably older than the houses they shade. Our first question on those is not how to remove it, it is whether it needs removing at all. Old trees frequently look worse than they are — a large old wound the tree has successfully walled off is not the same as active decay through the stem.
What a genuinely old tree usually needs is deadwood removal, selective reduction on overextended limbs, and sometimes cabling or bracing to support a weak union rather than losing the limb. The practical realities of downtown jobs: no room to drop anything, so every piece is rigged and lowered under control. Service drops running through canopies almost everywhere. Permits inside the city limits: single-family residential properties in Marietta generally do not require a tree removal permit or notification to remove a tree on their own land. Commercial, multi-family and apartment properties do — an application to the Department of Development Services with a site plan, species, trunk diameter at 4.5 feet, photos and usually an arborist's report, with a decision typically issued within about ten days.
